How to save an offline map
Open Apple Maps and search for the city, region, address, or place you will need later. Tap the place card and choose Download or Download Offline Map. Adjust the area so it includes more than just one pin: add your hotel, station, airport, parking garage, detour roads, or the nearest larger town.
Do the download on Wi-Fi whenever possible. Afterward, tap your profile picture in Apple Maps and open Offline Maps to confirm the map is actually there. That check matters. You do not want to discover in a parking garage, on a train, or near a border that you only searched for a place but never downloaded the map.
When it is worth doing
Offline maps are useful when you want to save mobile data abroad, drive through coverage gaps, or navigate inside places with weak reception. Common examples are underground parking, mountain valleys, ferries, motorway stretches, festivals, holiday resorts, and roaming zones where the signal keeps changing.
For a trip, do a small preparation pass: save the destination area, accommodation, airport or station, rental car pickup, and important stops along the way. If you are driving, start the route while the connection is still good. That gives Apple Maps a better chance of keeping guidance stable when the signal gets poor.
What works offline and what does not
A saved map helps with orientation, roads, many places, and navigation inside the downloaded area. It does not replace a live connection. Traffic, fresh road closures, current opening hours, reviews, and last-minute changes may be missing or outdated.
For city breaks, normal driving, and holiday regions, Apple Maps is often enough. For hiking, remote areas, or serious outdoor routes, add a dedicated map app with topographic detail and offline tracks.
Storage and cleanup
Offline maps use storage. After a trip, delete regions you no longer need so your iPhone does not fill up quietly. If you have enough space, keep automatic updates enabled so saved maps stay reasonably current in the background.
A simple routine works best: download before the trip, check on travel day, then delete or keep the map after you return depending on whether you visit that area often. It takes two minutes and can remove a lot of travel friction later.
