Use Damp Towels Safely During Heat

TL;DR
Damp towels can help on hot days, but only with airflow and humidity control. If the room feels humid, ventilate briefly even during the day.

Use Damp Towels Safely During Heat

What the Trick Actually Does

A damp towel does not magically cool an entire apartment. It uses evaporation: water moves into the air and takes a little heat with it. That can feel pleasant when air is moving across the towel.

The catch is simple: the moisture does not disappear. It ends up in the room air. If the room is closed or already humid, the trick can make the climate worse. The air feels heavier, sweating works less well, and the heat may become more uncomfortable.

How to Use Damp Towels Sensibly

Use no more than one or two towels, and make them lightly damp rather than dripping wet. Place them where air can move: near an open window, close to a fan, or in a room with cross-ventilation.

Do not follow a rigid “only ventilate in the morning and evening” rule. Morning and evening are good for longer ventilation because the outside air is often better. But in a small apartment, humidity can rise during the day from people, cooking, showers, or damp towels. If the air feels heavy, humid, or stuffy, ventilate briefly even if it is warm outside. The goal is not perfect coolness; it is getting moisture out and exchanging the air.

When to Skip It

In closed, small, or already humid rooms, damp towels are usually a bad idea. Many wet towels are also the wrong move: more water does not automatically mean more cooling; it often just means more humidity. In small apartments, a rigid “do not ventilate during the day” rule can become risky when people are home and humidity rises. For older, frail, or ill people, humid stagnant air adds extra strain.

Be especially careful when older people, children, or anyone with circulation problems is in the room. On hot days, basics matter more than myths: shade the room during the day, ventilate for longer in cooler hours, but also exchange air briefly during the day if humidity rises. Drink enough, reduce physical strain, and take warning signs seriously.

The Short Rule

A damp towel can be useful, but only lightly damp, only one or two, and only with airflow. Once the room feels humid or heavy, remove it and exchange the air immediately, even during the day.
