Reader Mode: Distraction-Free Reading in Safari

TL;DR
Ads, pop-ups, and sidebars disappear – only the article remains. One click in Safari is all it takes.

Reader Mode: Distraction-Free Reading in Safari

How to do it

  1. Open Safari and navigate to any article (news site, blog, etc.).
  2. Click the text lines icon in the URL bar (or press Cmd+Shift+R on Mac).
  3. On iPhone/iPad: tap AA β†’ select "Show Reader".
  4. The page is instantly cleaned up: only text, images, and headings remain.
  5. In Reader Mode, you can adjust font size, typeface, and background color (tap AA β†’ settings).
  6. To exit: click the Reader icon again or press Cmd+Shift+R.

Why this helps

Safari extracts the main content (the actual article) and hides everything else – ads, cookie banners, navigation bars, comment sections. The result: you read faster and with better focus.

Pro tips

  • Auto-enable: In Safari settings, you can turn on Reader Mode permanently for specific websites.
  • Perfect for printing: Reader Mode β†’ Cmd+P gives you a clean printout without ads.
  • Works offline: Once the page is loaded, Reader content stays available.

Limitations

  • Not every page is supported – the Reader icon only appears for recognized articles.
  • Some formatting (code blocks, interactive elements) may be lost.
