How to do it
Blot immediately β Grab a dry cloth or paper towel and dab from the outside in. Never rub! Rubbing pushes the pigments deeper into the fabric.
Rinse with cold water β Ideally from the back of the fabric to push the stain out rather than in. No hot water β heat sets the stain permanently.
Keep blotting β Alternate between rinsing and blotting until almost no color transfers to the cloth.
Optional: white wine or sparkling water β A splash helps dilute the pigments. But honestly, plain water does essentially the same thing.
Wash afterwards β Apply stain remover and wash according to the care label.
Why this works
Red wine contains anthocyanins (color pigments) and tannins that quickly bond to textile fibers. The key is speed: the faster you dilute, blot, and rinse, the less pigment binds permanently.
White wine isn't a miracle cure β it just adds more liquid for dilution. Water works just as well.
Important
- Don't rub β pushes pigments deeper into the fabric
- No hot water β can permanently set stains
- For silk, wool, or upholstery β test on a hidden spot first, consider professional cleaning
π‘ Pro tip: You can also just drink the white wine β at least it helps with the frustration. π·
