How to do it
Prepare both devices: Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on for both your Mac and iPhone. Keep them within 10 meters of each other.
Select and share: On the sending device, select the file, photo, or link you want to share. Tap the Share button (the square with an upward arrow).
Choose AirDrop: In the sharing menu, tap AirDrop. Your other device should appear within a few seconds.
Pick the recipient: Tap on the target device. The file transfers immediately.
Accept on the receiver: If AirDrop is set to "Contacts Only" and both devices use the same Apple ID, files are accepted automatically. Otherwise, you'll see a confirmation prompt.
Why this helps
- AirDrop uses Bluetooth for discovery and Wi-Fi Direct for the actual transfer β much faster than uploading to the cloud.
- The transfer is end-to-end encrypted.
- You don't need an internet connection β AirDrop works without a Wi-Fi network.
Security tip
Set AirDrop to "Contacts Only" instead of "Everyone" β this prevents strangers from sending you unwanted files in public places.
Tip: AirDrop also works between different people's Apple devices β great for sharing photos at events or family gatherings.
