How it works
1. Mission Control - The Window Overview
Open: Ctrl + Arrow up or swipe up with 3 fingers (trackpad)
Use: Shows all open windows + Spaces + fullscreen apps at a glance
Pro tip: Drag windows between Spaces = instant move
2. Collect App Windows
Shortcut: Ctrl + Arrow down or swipe down with 3 fingers
What happens: Shows all windows of CURRENT app
Why useful: Safari with 10 windows? See them all instantly!
3. Split Window (Split View)
Hold green button (top left in window)
β Choose: Left or Right
β Pick second window from list
Result: Two apps perfectly side-by-side (50/50 or adjustable)
Shortcut: Cmd + Ctrl + F for fullscreen (then Split possible)
4. Move Windows Between Displays
Green button + Option key = moves fullscreen window to other display
Or: Ctrl + Cmd + F for fullscreen β then drag to other display in Mission Control
5. Hide All Windows (except active app)
Shortcut: Cmd + Option + H
What happens: Hides ALL apps except current one
Use case: Presentations, screenshots, focus mode
Back: Cmd + Tab to another app = shows itself again
6. See Window on All Spaces
Right-click on window title bar β "Options" β "On all Spaces"
Result: Window stays visible no matter which Space you're on
Perfect for: Notes app, Calendar, Music player
7. Clear Desktop Instantly
Trackpad: Spread with 4-5 fingers (outward swipe)
Shortcut: Fn + F11 (older macOS) or Cmd + Mission Control
Result: All windows disappear to the sides β clear desktop
Back: Same gesture again
Why this helps
macOS has powerful window management tools built in - but Apple hides them! With these shortcuts you work:
- Faster: No mouse needed, direct access
- More organized: Split View + Spaces = perfect multi-tasking
- More professional: Presentations without background chaos
The trick: Combine multiple features! Example: Mission Control β drag window to new Space β activate Split View = perfect workflow!
Good to know
- Create Spaces: Mission Control β click "+" top right β new desktop
- Customize trackpad gestures: System Preferences β Trackpad β More Gestures
- Works from: macOS El Capitan (2015) - newer versions have more features
- Tip: Practice these shortcuts for 2-3 days - they'll become routine!
- Warning: Some gestures conflict with app shortcuts (e.g. Adobe) - customizable in System Preferences
