Start with one quick audit
Look at every icon on the right side of your Mac menu bar. For each one, ask: do I need to see this status several times a week, or do I only keep it there because the app added it automatically?
Then open System Settings and review the Control Center and menu bar options. Many macOS system items can stay available in Control Center without taking permanent space in the menu bar.
Keep only useful signals
Good candidates to keep visible are the clock, Wi-Fi, battery, Focus, and tools whose status actually matters while you work. Everything else can move into Control Center, the app's own settings, or out of the menu bar entirely.
For third-party apps, check their preferences. A surprising number of apps add a menu bar item on launch even when you almost never click it.
Why it works
The menu bar is small, but it is always in your field of view. Fewer icons mean less visual noise, faster scanning, and a calmer desktop.
This is especially useful if you switch tasks often or install many small utilities. You are not removing capability; you are removing constant micro-distractions.
Know the exception
Do not hide security or system tools when their status needs active monitoring. If your VPN, backup app, password manager, or protection tool should stay visible for a reason, leave it there.
