How to set it up
Open ChatGPT or another AI tool and give it the real travel context first: destination, trip length, season, accommodation, planned activities and transport. Add whether you travel with children, whether you have luggage limits and whether laundry is possible during the trip.
A useful prompt is: "Create a packing list for a 7-day family trip to southern France in July. We travel with two children, stay in an apartment, drive by car, go to the beach and plan two city visits. Sort it by documents, clothing, tech, medication, children, beach and miscellaneous. Mark what belongs in hand luggage."
Why it helps
Packing lists are pattern work: many items repeat, but the useful details depend on your exact situation. AI helps because you do not start from a generic checklist that ignores weather, kids, luggage and accommodation.
You get a first version that combines trip length, climate, activities and family needs. Then you can delete what does not fit and add personal must-haves.
Check the critical items yourself
Do not rely on AI for high-stakes travel requirements. Always verify passports, visas, medication, insurance, vaccinations, local rules and safety questions with official sources or your own documents.
Use AI for structure and completeness, not as the final authority. This matters especially for medication, children’s needs and anything that could block the trip.
Make it more useful
Ask AI for three final sections: "must pack", "only if there is space" and "do before leaving". That turns the packing list into a simple checklist for the last 24 hours before departure.
